Sales History and Outlook Report (SHOR)

The first quarter Sales History & Outlook Report (SHOR) released by the Power Transmission Distributors Association (PTDA) shows power transmission/motion control (PT/MC) distributor sales transitioned to rise although it remains 1.9% below the year-ago level. However, there are several positive signs that suggest Total Sales will be above the year-ago level in the coming months. The quarterly growth rate, 4.8%, is now above zero and is rising. Plan for rising annual Sales into mid-2019.

About SHOR

Developed and managed in conjunction with  ITR Economics,  SHOR is part of a quarterly survey combined with the PTDA Business Index survey that focuses on member PT/MC product sales. SHOR aggregates your company’s quarterly sales data and presents the results in customized reports. An analysis is provided highlighting major economic trends identified during the forecast process that may impact your company. Use this critical information to create data-driven business plans for marketing initiatives, resource allocation and product launches.

SHOR tracks total quarterly sales for both distributors and manufacturers and (for manufactures only) six specific product categories including:

  • Bearings
  • Motors
  • Controls
  • Gearing
  • Conveyors/conveyor materials handling equipment
  • Hydraulics/pneumatics

Data provided for the above categories are also represented in charts to track overall product movement as well as total sales movement.

Members will only be able to access their own company data and the aggregate data and reports.
Private company data is never shared or available between participating companies.

Check out a  30 minute tutorial with ITR Economist Connor Lokar as he walks through the SHOR + Business Index survey and then reviews each report, explaining how to interpret each report's graphics and trend analysis so you understand how to utilize these reports to modify your forecasts and business plans.

Why You Should Participate

As one of your valuable PTDA Member Advantages, PTDA member companies participating in SHOR receive the results at no charge.

"I use SHOR to review relevant manufacturer product categories to compare our sales numbers to make sure we align. If I see a category beginning to slow or see a long-term increase, we will re-assess our inventory and adjust accordingly. I also look at the distributor’s total sales versus the Purchasing Managers Index and use these trends to inform my forecasting for our annual business plan."

-Ron Herem, president, Baldwin Supply Company

How to Participate

Emails from ITR Economics, the survey administrator, are sent to one person at each PTDA member company to gain participation. Learn more about how to participate in the survey.

How to Access the Final Report

SHOR is available for purchase by anyone after the initial release to survey participants. Reports are released to the public 90 days after distribution to survey participants. The most recent report is now available for public purchase.
