PT/MC Manufacturers Post Double-Digit Sales Gains in 2010 According
to PTDA's Year-End 2010 Market Outlook Report
Year-end sales data for power transmission/motion control (PT/MC)
products shows that U.S. and Canadian manufacturers sales increased by
double digits in 2010 as compared to 2009 according to sales data
released by the Power Transmission Distributors Association (PTDA) in
its Market Outlook Report.
Following a significant drop of 26.9 percent in
2009, U.S. manufacturers saw a 14.6 percent increase in PT/MC product
sales in 2010. The annualized sales-to-inventory ratio for 2010 dropped
from 10.5 at year-end 2009 to 9.5 at year-end in 2010.
Canadian manufacturers' sales fared slightly
better in 2010, with a 15.1 percent increase in sales in 2010, following
a 24.7 percent drop in 2009. The annualized sales-to-inventory ratio
rose significantly to 10.8 at year-end 2010 compared to 7.1 at year-end
2009.
In considering sales growth on a
product-by-product basis for 2010, both U.S. and Canadian manufacturers
posted sales increases in every category with just one
exception.

December Sales Results Show Declines
In December 2010, U.S.
manufacturers’ overall sales of PT/MC products fell by 3.8 percent
when compared to November 2010. Compared to the same period last
year, sales in December 2010 were up 20.9 percent. Orders in
December 2010 were down 5.5 percent compared to November 2010. The
confidence level of U.S. manufacturers dropped to 4.8 (down 0.3
points from November 2010 levels on a 10-point scale with 5.0 being
neutral).
Canadian manufacturers’ sales
dropped 9.9 percent compared to November 2010. Sales were up
27.9 percent when compared to the same period last year. The
confidence level of Canadian manufacturers fell slightly to 4.8, down
0.1 from last month’s level (on a 10-point scale with 5.0 being
neutral).
Sales between November 2010 and
December 2010 in specific product categories reflect the change in sales
experienced by U.S. and Canadian manufacturers. Month-to-month
sales for nine product categories between November 2010 and December
2010 for U.S. and Canadian manufacturers are reported
below.
