Job Descriptions & Evaluations

Job descriptions and performance evaluation criteria are practical expressions of corporate goals and direction—and the employee skills and knowledge required to achieve these objectives.

Job descriptions and performance evaluations are a critical component of:

  • Identifying and hiring qualified candidates.
  • Ensuring employees are meeting corporate goals.
  • Defining needed employee development.
  • Promoting employees objectively.

While informal processes and procedures may have been sufficient and successful in the past, in these increasingly litigious times, documented, legally defensible policies should be part of any company’s human resources program, regardless of company size.

Recommended steps to implement a job description and performance assessment program include:

  1. Identify corporate strategic direction and objectives and use them as the basis to determine knowledge and skills individual employees must have.
  2. Conduct a job analysis of key positions and develop customized job descriptions.
  3. Incorporate job descriptions into human resources procedures related to hiring, evaluation, continuing education and promotion.
  4. Develop performance evaluation forms that identify general categories of responsibility and specific duties that are key to successful performance of job responsibilities and reflect employee success in achieving corporate goals and objectives.
  5. Develop policy and procedure guidelines to ensure systematic administration of the performance assessment program, establish an evaluation cycle and provide necessary supervisor training.
  6. Based on performance evaluations, identify opportunities for employee employees to learn and refine skills and knowledge critical to their job performance.
  7. Review job descriptions and performance evaluation policy and documents on a regular basis to ensure they continue to reflect company direction.
