Performance Evaluation Overview

Performance appraisal is an ongoing process that allows supervisors to help employees perform their jobs effectively and provides a structure for feedback on work performance.

Performance evaluations empower employees to succeed by:

  • Defining concrete goals.
  • Providing ongoing feedback.
  • Establishing clear links between individual performance and important organizational objectives. 

The primary objectives of the performance appraisal system are to:

  • Inform employees of work performance expectations and how the end results of their work performance will be measured.
  • Provide feedback to employees on their work performance and develop appropriate goals for future growth.
  • Provide a uniform method for performance evaluation and an equitable and objective basis for salary administration.
  • Provide documentation for human resource decisions, such as training, career pathing or organizational development.

The performance appraisal process includes three phases:

  • Planning to establish objectives, outline work performance expectations, define how results will be measured and determine objective priority.
  • Monitoring and feedback to provide ongoing informal feedback, both positive and negative, on performance and progress toward accomplishing objectives. 
  • Formal evaluation in writing and in a formal review discussion with the employee.
