Walking the Aisles of the Motion Control Showcase
Let’s amble down the aisles of an international
exhibition. All around us we see displays by the vanguard of the
industries they serve. It could be Hanover, Nuremburg or Seoul,
but it’s not. It’s right here, and it’s part of
the PTDA Industry Summit. It’s the Motion Control
Showcase.
This year PTDA’s Industry Summit features an all-star lineup of
motion control manufacturers. Solving customer problems that
involve regulated speed, shaft position, part placement or torque is a
big part of our industry. Combining all of these elements with
sensors, human interface devices and electronics equates to motion
control. And, since we’re the right people, join me as we
take a sneak preview of what you might see.
The industry leaders in variable frequency drive systems will be out
in force. We’ll learn about new breakthroughs in technology
that make the drives smaller and less susceptible to industrial
temperatures. Some of these will be so energy friendly –
they pay for themselves in months. And, we’ll see amazing
technology that eliminates the need for expensive programming.
As we turn the aisle, we will see technology that allows this
equipment to communicate via Ethernet. The very same wire that
drives your laptop can now push information from the very front lines of
manufacturing back to a monitoring website. And, a lot of this
looks and feels just like a slightly oversized terminal block.
Some customer applications require position controlled to a thousandth
of an inch. We’ll see advanced drives, servo control systems
and the computer-esque screens designed to relay information to the
people running the machines.
We’ll greet old friends and colleagues who have seen motion
control add to their bottom line. As we talk with them, we
won’t help but notice precision couplings and linear motion
systems specifically designed to improve customer applications.
We’ll be shocked at the “pre-engineered” systems that
can provide our customers with state-of-the-art solutions in days rather
than weeks.
Finally, we decide to grab a cup of coffee and reflect on what we
just took in. We realize that some of our old vendor partners seem
to have quietly added mega capabilities to their portfolios. We
grab our notebook and scratch a reminder for our first day back in the
office. The note reads:
“Talk to our sales guys about customer potential!
There’s gold in those Motion Control hills.”
